Cornell Village Public School is an elementary school in Markham, ON. Its population is diverse—classes range from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 and the student population boasts 15 different first languages. The School Advisory Council went online in 2004. Over the years, general school information crept onto the site. In 2008, the council decided to expand their website from a council website to a school-wide website to better serve the school community.
While the old site incorporated CSS for formatting, it used a table-based layout. The redesign is a tableless layout that incorporates the full power of CSS. It’s leaner and downloads faster. This is a large site and the savings in server space was significant. The uncluttered visual design gives parents access to a vast archive of school information. The straightforward organization and navigation quickly takes the visitor to their destination without getting lost on the way. The interface had to be intuitive enough for users with limited english, yet rich enough to interest native speakers. The language is clear to assist those parents for whom english is not their first language. The colour scheme is subtle; getting its cues from the school’s architecture.
One of the school’s goals is to go as paperless as possible. The monthly Principal’s Message and quarterly Parent to Parent Newsletter are no longer distributed in paper format, but are available online. Cornell Village Public School is doing its part for the environment!
