The American Women’s Club (AWC) of Oslo offers women living in Oslo, Norway the opportunity to become acquainted with other Americans living in Oslo, explore Norwegian and American culture, participate in varied programs and activities, and network within a large resource group sharing the "Norwegian experience" with their American friends.
In 1999, AWC Oslo celebrated its 65th Anniversary with the launch of a web site to provide information and online support to its growing membership. I spearheaded that project. From a club without an online presence to one with a web site of 100-plus pages of valuable information, AWC Oslo was ready to launch themselves into the 21st century.
The primary design challenge was to create a site that suited the Club—both as women and Americans. I designed a simple, attractive layout using subtle shades of red, white and blue, along with a banner showing the many faces of the AWC Oslo. I developed a logical, easy-to-navigate interface that the members could access regardless of their familiarity with computers and the Web.
One of the first challenges was to collect all the available information and organize it. While there was a lot of basic material with which to work, it was scattered throughout the city and most of it was unsuitable for direct translation to the Web. I organized the existing information, edited it, and created new container-subpage to fill the gaps.
One of the main goals of the web site was to provide potential members access to information about Norway to aid them in their relocation. In 1999 such information was scarce and virtually nonexistent online. I meticulously researched all of the newcomer information and created the content from scratch.
The club wanted membership information available online to all its members. However, members wanted to maintain their privacy; a requirement that became even more important after 9/11. I created a password protected Members Only section to ensure privacy of its member information and to provide access to the bonus information and resources available as a member of the AWC Oslo.
The membership of the AWC spanned all age groups and all levels of computer literacy. To ensure every member had equal access to club information, I developed a user education program. Both large and small group sessions were held to introduce members to the many facets of the new web site and how to access it. In addition, I created user documentation and made available both online and offline.

Note: The AWC Oslo web site was redesigned. While the container-subpage created by H3 Web Boutique remains, the site design is not the work of H3 Web Boutique.
